In Others’ Words: Color

“I cannot pretend to feel impartial about colors. I rejoice with the brilliant ones and am genuinely sorry for the poor browns.” ~Sir Winston Churchill, British statesman

Green is my all-time favorite color. Not any-old green — a vivid, forest green. My living room and dining room are both painted a lush green … and I have no plans to change those walls anytime soon.

Why do I like the color green? It represents life to me … growth … the color green contains so many shades of promise.

From Churchill’s quote, it’s apparent he wasn’t a fan of brown. I wonder what brilliant color he “rejoiced” with most: blue? red? yellow?

In Your Words: What color do you “rejoice” with — and why? Do you feel sorry for any particular color?

  1. My favorite color is blue, and shades of blue are used throughout my house. I love the soothing, serene feeling it represents because most of my day is the exact opposite of serene. My day is filled with all colors–bold reds, shy lavenders, brilliant blues, growing greens, creative yellows, and yes, even those browns that may feel neutral. Color paints my world, and right now, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

  2. Okay, I confess, I like brown, mostly to wear. πŸ™‚ I don’t claim it as a favorite color, but I do like it. I think I feel sorry for black. My favorites are greens and shades of reds. πŸ™‚ Fun conversation today!

    1. I like to wear brown too — after a friend encouraged me to try it on. I used to wear black a lot and now I avoid it. Too harsh.

  3. I love that quote! So funny. I rejoice with pink. It makes me feel alive. Especially a bright pink. There’s something so vivid and unique about it.

  4. Technically they say black isn’t a color but the absence of color–interesting to think about. My usual favorite is the warm mid-blue contrasted with rose tones which decorates my living room. Wasn’t sure where that came from until looking out the window one day I noticed that they are the colors of sunrise and sunset. My favorite comfy bath robe is bright red. My sheets by choice are burgundy–not sure why, but it greatly appeals to me, maybe energizes. All colors seem to have their particular gift.

  5. I feel sorry for white or maybe I’m just scared I’ll get it dirty. I often find myself in blacks or grays just because those are easier (perhaps goes back to my fear of getting white dirty). I like to rejoice with an unexpected pop of red!

    1. Interesting perspective on white, Stacy. Hadn’t thought of that — but I do know I avoid white pants for the very same reason! And I love red too! (Although for years it was considered my twin sister’s color and not mine.)

  6. I love green and blue. And sometimes yellow, too.

I was about to say I feel sorry for brown…then I remembered where I live. Soil means life here in Iowa. So I can’t feel so sorry for its color anymore. πŸ™‚

  7. Your love of green and growth reflect here on your site, but you know this! πŸ˜‰ I rejoice with reds, gold, brown, orange, sage…they’re cozy colors that encourage me to snuggle up and enjoy what’s around me. I love earth tones and my house reflects that! I don’t feel bad for any colors. I think they’re all glorious!

  8. I wear a lot of brown, but wouldn’t pick it as a favorite color. Perhaps a deep shade of purple is my favorite color…or red. I love red…and blue, especially the blue of an October sky…Ack! They’re all my favorite.

  9. I am a sucker for black. For clothes I almost always gravitate toward it. For the color itself I’m big into kelly green. it just seems so vibrant and alive.

I like colorful things, but I’m not a huge fan of mauve. It kinda makes me nauseated.

    1. I love purple too — and there is a particular shade of mauve nail polish I like — but it’s a deep mauve, not an icky mauve.

    1. I have this photo of a beautiful woman in a period costume — and it’s purple.
Oh, wait! The beautiful woman is you, Keli!

  12. Buttery yellow has grown to mean light and life and freedom for me. It’s the color of the place where much healing has come for me. So I find myself coloring my rooms yellow because it beckons me to come dance!!!!
