Our perspective affects our outlook on life.
And author Robert Brault’s mindset makes me smile.
We all know the traditional, here-they-come-again celebrations. Birthdays. Independence Day. Thanksgiving. Yom Kippur. Christmas. Weddings — and the subsequent anniversaries. Graduations.
But what other special occasions can we celebrate besides the ones already prewritten on most calendars? The photo above is recreated at every Deep Thinkers retreat, an annual writers conference that meets in Destin, Florida. Attendees always take time out for a photo shoot and from the very first one a dozen years ago, there’s been a feet-in-the-sand photograph.
What other moments can be celebrated? How about:
- An unexpected rainbow
- Someone else’s success
- The overflowing noise and activity of family gathered all around for no special reason. It will be quiet again soon enough.
- The lessons learned when we fail

Great thoughts here, Beth. Our family celebrates the end of a chapter (i.e. the last day of school), and we celebrate firsts (the first ever band concert a kiddo plays in). We celebrate accomplishments (finishing a rough draft), and we celebrate just because. 🙂

Well,Andrew, I will celebrate you today. Truly. Celebrating you.
I’m celebrating having repeat laser surgery on one eye Tues. & seeing it already make a difference–so far, no regular headache from eye strain & eyes are pretty important so I’m more than thankful. Probably a changed glasses Rx in a few weeks after things settle, but I’m already more than grateful for the improvement so far.

Our grandkids live right across the street so we see them often. This week they get out of school for the summer. Our granddaughter from first grade and our grandson from preschool. We’ve kept them both since they were babies so this is a very big milestone. In the fall they start second grade and kindergarten. This was going to be our time to get out and start traveling in our RV some before we get too old. However my elderly mom has had to move in with us so that changes our plans totally! It’s really tough some days.
However I celebrate that she’s still living and I get to see her everyday!
