“Seize the moment. Remember all those women on the ‘Titanic’ who waved off the dessert cart?” Erma Bombeck (1927-1996), author & humorist
Seems everyone’s talking about the Titanic these days, what with the 100th anniversary of the ship’s maiden voyage, when it sank after striking an iceberg.
The movie “Titanic,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet has been re-released in 3-D. And among the books written about the Titanic are a couple by some of my writing friends:
- By the Light of the Silvery Moon by Tricia Goyer
- Titanic: Legacy of Betrayal by my friends Paula Moldenhauer & Kathleen Kovach
In Your Words: Back to today’s quote: How have you seized the moment in the past week?
I’m interviewed over at Relz Review today. I hope you stop by!

I think sometimes the moment seizes us and we cooperate or wriggle out of its grasp. In my WIP I’ve been like a ship chugging ahead but encountering an obstacle and needing to reverse engines–change directions–still recalculating, but that in itself counts as seizing the moment.
Yes, it does count, Dee. Seeing the new direction and seizing that new moment.
🙂
I shut off the computer for large chunks of my days. Spring break week. I’m grateful for doing so. Getting back on full force feels a little foreign b/c of my short break. Wild how that happens.

Wendy,
I am so thankful when those times occur — when I unplug from all of this. Coming back is a bit of a shock, as you say … but I’m as more ready to engage because I’ve rested.
Took a break from my regularly scheduled evening and begged my husband to watch a movie with me. Just because I needed that time with him.
Wise choice, Jeanne.
🙂
I LOVE Erma Bombeck and just realized (when I read that quote to my daughter) that I’ve been remiss in introducing Emily to Erma’s writing – a situation I must rectify.
This quote reminds me of a restaurant in my little town that (before unfortunately closed) was famous for their pies and sold t-shirts with the caption “Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first.”
I actually posted today about “wasting what is precious” – by not appreciating (and seizing) what we’ve been given in the moment.
How have I seized the moment this week? Hmmm…..good question. I’ll have to think on this for a while. I sometimes struggle to find a balance between “seizing the moment” and giving into the “tyranny of the moment.”
Erma has always been one of my favorite writers. Such wisdom wrapped in humor.
Ooh, ooh, I read a Titanic book recently – Promise Me This by Cathy Gohlke and I absolutely adored it. Her writing is sooo beautiful. Actually the book starts with the Titanic and goes through WWI. I LOVED it!
Allowed myself to sleep in twice this week. (As in, 6:15 instead of 5) Yeah, it definitely felt like seizing the moment. 🙂
Seizing the moment to rest … ah, wonderful.
Well for one I didn’t wave away the dessert! 🙂
But then on the way home from dinner and that really yummy gingersnap cookie, my husband and I detoured to the park for a walk. Otherwise I knew if I went home the couch would’ve called to me.
Have a happy weekend Beth!
I hope you have a wonderful weekend too, Coleen.
Um, not sure I did this week. But last week I took a blogging break and it felt really nice not to have the pressure of doing so much. 🙂
Here’s hoping you find a moment to seize this week too!
I put everything aside and read The Wedding Dress. Did that when Wish You Were Here came, too. Worth every minute.
🙂 Thank you, Pat. And I loved The Wedding Dress too!
I seized the moment and took a nap. Sounds trivial, but I needed one and I thought, you know everything else can stay on hold. So…I did it! 🙂
I think that was a wonderful moment to seize, Jess.
Hmm, I’m not so sure I’ve seized any moments, but I’ve embraced some. After learning of a local boy’s tragic death, we gave our younger a hug and let him know how much we loved him. We do that often, but at that moment, we needed to feel his presence even if he thinks we’re a bunch of weirdos. 🙂 And I laughed via texting with my older son. And when I received a sweet word of encouragement from my mentor. Moments–life is made of them.
Indeed, indeed, LJ. The simple, almost overlooked moments.
How did I seize the moment this week? I got outside and walked. Nothing refreshes me like a trek down my favorite trail with my awesome hubby by my side.
I’m looking forward to seizing many moments tonight when I crack open your book and dive in. Can’t wait to meet Allison and the fellows. =)
🙂
Walking is a favorite activity of mine too — such a stress-reliever.
I do hope you enjoy WYWH, Keli.
🙂
Wonderful question. I laid out in my lawn chair and soaked in the sun:)))
Ah, sounds wonderful.
