In Others’ Words: Adding Beauty to Life

We all know people who add beauty to life.

I also believe each one of us wants to be like author L. M. Montgomery, in that we would like to add some type of beauty to life. Sometimes, though, we get tripped up. We don’t think we add beauty to the world because we think it has to look a certain way. Perfect, maybe. Or like how someone else adds beauty to the world.

I have friends who create beauty in ways I never will. They sew or quilt — and that, as far as I’m concerned, is just math with material. But it is undeniably a way to add beauty to life. Other friends garden. Or paint. Or sing. Or sculpt. Or dance. Or play various musical instruments. Or teach. Do you know that there’s beauty in sports? Take as many photos of volleyball as I do — you’ll see it.

There’s beauty, too, in kindness. And laughter. And forgiveness. And listening to someone — really listening — when they are talking. And friendship … now that’s a beautiful thing.

All this to say, you’re more qualified to add beauty to the world than you realize. Beauty truly is sometimes seen … and other times it’s spoken … and other times, you can’t even describe beauty. You just know that it’s taken your breath away . . . and enlarged your heart.

In Your Words: Who has added beauty to your life? And how do you add beauty to life? Go ahead and share! I’d love to know what you do to add beauty to life.

    1. OK, maybe through humour; to wit (and please pardon the slightly edgy topic):

How would the outcome of the trial of a dog cited for urinating in public be determined?

By a jury of his pee-ers.

Maybe instead of ‘to wit’, I should have said ‘too witless’, yeah? 🙂

      1. Today being the most horrible of Really Pain-filled Days, here’s another bit of beauty-begging humour…

What do you call a rattlesnake that drops out of a tree onto the front window of your car?

        A windshield viper.

  1. For me, words create beauty in life. I write what I write hoping, praying that someone’s life would be richer, purer, and more beautiful because of what they’ve read.
That is my vision as a Christian writer.

Thanks for this post, Beth: life has been kind of dry for me the past few days… 🙂

    God bless!!

  2. Well said. Thanks for adding beauty to my day!
And your words go with a quote I just read yesterday:
“The insatiable fire for God’s beauty stokes the fire of the Christian life.”

  3. When I was a kid, the kind, grandmotherly librarian in the community center across the street encouraged my love for reading and me. I do my best to pass on the same and have opportunities with the college students I teach as many need and deserve bits of kindness along the way.

  4. Beth, thank you for this article. I especially needed to hear this line:

“And listening to someone — really listening — when they are talking.”

That’s something I have been striving to learn to do better. I feel like I’m still not where I want to be on it, but by the grace of our great God, I will get there. Thanks for the encouraging reminder!

    Hugs,
    Andrea

  5. What a great quote by one of my most favorite authors. I am blessed to have a number of people who add beauty to my life . . . through words and thoughtfulness (shown in actions and words). Those little things said and done that lift up a spirit . . . those are beautiful.

I would like to think I add beauty to life through words written and photographs snapped and shared. 🙂
