“A good home must be made, not bought.”
~Joyce Maynard, American author
Home.
To acquire a home, there’s usually a transaction — a sale — of some sort.
But wait a minute.
Do you live in a home? Or have you merely purchased a house? Foundation, roof, walls, rooms … all these things make up a house.
What transforms a house into a home?
The people dwelling there.
The passage of time.
The memories created. One. Moment. At. A. Time … until they tumble into years encompassing lifetimes.
Home. That place they say you can’t go back to — but that you carry in your heart always, for better, for worse.
In Your Words: What transforms a house into a home? Is there one family tradition that will always say “You’re home” to you? Or that says “Welcome to our home” when someone visits your house?

I agree, Beth. It’s all about the people. And the laughter. 🙂
Absolutely about the laughter, Sarah. My favorite sound: laughter.
We had a crazy transition year about five years ago where our whole family basically slept on mattresses on the floor, expecting my husband’s co. to move us any day. Any day turned into 365 days. We learned a lot about what makes a home during that year.

Wow, Wendy, I bet you did learn about family. I bet you did. 🙂
You and Rob have the art of establishing a true home down more than most couples I know. And one day you’ll continue pouring love, wisdom and fun into grandchildren, as I love to do.
All in good time, Dee. All in good time. I’m not in charge of the whole “grandkids” agenda! 🙂
I love that picture!! This is a wonderful post. Home…..more than how four wall are decorated. Our rooms are decorated with laughter and memories. Game nights. Movie nights. Laughter and chatter around the dinner table. Kids running around the “round about” to work off extra energy. These are some of what make up our home. Thanks for making me think about what make a home.
Ah, what a wonderful glimpse of home, Jeanne!
Family, laughter and old movies. That’s what tells me I’m home. That and the fact that someone in the family always feels the need to whip out, “Awww, home sweat home.” And yes, I typed “sweat” on purpose. I drew a picture once for my mom to welcome her home from something…not so good with the spelling at that point in my life!
I got it, Melissa, I did! (The first time too!)
🙂
Wow, horrible job explaining the “home sweat home” story. I meant to say, I drew my mom a picture and included the caption “home sweat home.” The picture and accompanying misspelling lives in infamy in the Tagg household…
Believe it or not, I followed your first explanation, Melissa. 🙂 Love hearing traditions and memories from families. 🙂
Me too, Jeanne. Me too.
Home reminds me of unconditional love, security, and music. There was always music in our home growing up. It still plays an integral part of my life thanks to their wonderful love for that art form. Thanks for your wonderful words today, Beth.
Ah, music. That too. Definitely need that to dance in the kitchen!
As I said in reply to you on Keli’s blog–Home is where you hang your heart. My house is old, creaky and definitely not a cover spread in Better Homes & Garden, but we welcome and love with open arms and hearts. I have a picture sitting on the bookcase by my chair that reads “Home is where your story begins.”
I love that saying: Home is where your story begins!
🙂
I’m such a homebody. I love where I live because it’s where my nearest and dearest lives, too. I moved lotsa times growing up, and I enjoy the feeling of community now that my hubby and I have put down roots.
I was all about “putting down roots” too, Keli. Then I married my military guy. Now I have “roots” extending all around the world. 🙂
