“Life is worth living as long as there’s a laugh in it.” ~L.M. Montgomery, author, Anne of Greene Gables
Yep. That’s a photo of me … laughing so hard something’s probably trying to come out my nose. And, yes, it’s during a game night with some of our best game night buddies, our friends “The Martys.”
I am a huge proponent of game nights.
And the newest Vogt family game: Quelf. If you do not own this game, go purchase it immediately. Seriously. It is the most laugh-inducing game we’ve ever played.
Laughter truly is good medicine — both Scripture and scientific research says so. To encourage laughter at the end of your week, here’s a one-minute clip from one of my favorite comedians, Ken Davis:

In Your Words: What makes you laugh? Do you have a favorite family game or a favorite comedian?

We used to play lots of board games with our daughter. Alas, she grew up and headed off to college. When she visits, we play some of our favorites: Scrabble, Bananagrams, and Scattergories. We’re pretty serious when we’re immersed in the first two, but we can get pretty silly and do some serious laughing when we share our answers in Scattergories.
Uno — that is the game that reduces my daughters to ridiculous giggles. Don’t know why. Do they coat the cards with something? My son … he just shakes his head.
That game looks interesting. We’ll have to find it.

Some friends found it at the local Target. We went online.
Ken Davis is one of my favorite comedians too, and yes, he makes me laugh! The tears rolling from the eyes kind. 🙂 My kids make me laugh, funny friends, some movies. I need a laugh-filled day today. 🙂
Here’s hoping you have many moments of laughter today. There are lots of Ken Davis clips on YouTube.
😉
We don’t have a game night–a favorite when kids (and grandkids) were younger was pick-up sticks. Now they’re into checkers, chess, angry birds. But I do love laughter, will go to great lengths to provoke/produce. Will give some thoughty thought to investigating the games you name and starting a new tradition.
Pick-Up Sticks.
Now there’s a memory.
Angry Birds.
I just don’t get it.
I love board games, especially Balderdash and other games that mean you have to make up crazy definitions, etc…and we can get pretty creative on some of them! Loved the pic of you laughing. Priceless!
There’s a story behind that photo … my friend, Marty … well, he is h-y-s-t-e-r-i-c-a-l. And he had said something so off-the-cuff and somebody caught me trying not to snort tea through my nose.
Lovely, eh?
I’m in love with that picture of you. THE STUFF OF LIFE IN THAT PICTURE.
~ Wendy
Absolutely.
The best stuff of life.
Love to play games with my fam! We love Quelf, too. My sibs and I have a blast playing nertz, fastest-bestest card game ever. And yes, we laugh hysterically. Love!
Melissa,
Why am I not surprised that your family knows about Quelf?
I’m with Wendy on that photo, Beth. I LOVE IT!!! (It’s hard to laugh and still look adorable. I’m going to practice that pose. I usually show off the scars from my tonsillectomy.)
My grown-up kids really enjoy playing games and I’m always looking for a new one to buy them (though they usually introduce me to the good ones). Balderdash is one we have fun with. I’ll be checking out Quelf, for sure!
Everything makes me laugh, there’s no telling when it’s going to hit. (It’s the same with tears.) Last night I laughed myself silly over some childhood antics a friend on Facebook was sharing.
Thanks for the wonderful MBT Peptalk last night, Beth. It was awesome!! I LAUGHED SO OFTEN AND SO HARD at you three ladies!! Plus, there was so much great information!! You’re the bomb. ; )
Patti —
🙂
Me, Rachel, Suz … good times, all the time.
Friends make the best laughter, dont’ they?
Love that picture and I agree, laughing is the BEST! We have game nights. I’m a fan of Balderdash and Uno, but I love to play MOODS. Oh that one is hysterical!
Oh, I’ve played MOODS! Love it!
Your photo makes me happy! I love playing games with my family too. Good times!
Megan — happy day after your birthday, friend!
We play Settlers of Catan! I’ll trade you wood for brick…or sheep for wheat? hehehe…
Every holiday, we break out the game boards. Also love Apples to Apples. Good times and loads of laughter!
Sheep for wheat … that works for me. I won that game one time. One stinkin’ time. And I insisted my family take a photo to commemorate the victory — because I knew that would probably be the only time I win the game. Vogts are fierce competitors. F-i-e-r-c-e. We’re laughing, but we’re playing to win!
🙂
Thanks for the quote and your thoughts with the cuter than cute pic of you. Laughter is my favorite sound. And I laugh when we have laughs together. 🙂
Laughter is my favorite sound, too.
Let’s get together and share a few.
Oh I used to love game nights with good friends! Hoping I get that chance here again some day:)) Love to laugh–heard the other day that laughing can burn as much calories as a 30 minute workout–so worth it!
Oooh, the caloric benefits of laughter.
Who knew?
😉
What makes me laugh … funny or profound things my grandkids say (How old is God?) or when they try to pronounce big words or when they are acting silly (grandsons are 4 1/2 and 6). Other people laughing – we have all been there, you can’t remember why you are laughing, but as the other person is laughing, you just start to laugh at them laughing. Jim Carrey, and in many cases, my son imitating Jim Carrey. My Uncle Boyd used to make me laugh all the time. He had a one-liner for everything. I miss him. Marx Brothers movies. Danny Kaye. Victoria Borgia (sp?).
Danny Kaye. Absolutely Danny Kaye!
And everything else…
Our family loves games, too! Lately, our favorite has been Yahtzee … the “Hello Kitty” version! My 4-year-old wins every time. Someday, I’m taking her to Vegas to roll the dice! Another favorite of the girls’ is “Pretty Pretty Princess” where you win if you get the crown, necklace, earrings, and bracelet in your princess color. Daddy has even won this one! 🙂
Photo of Daddy, please, as “Pretty Pretty Princess” winner!
:O)
Love game night! We are big board game peeps 🙂 Our new favorite is a game called zero, but we also can get big fun out of simple ones like boggle. I am looking up quelf right now! Thanks Beth!
Shark bait!!!
Good times, good times!
My son, Brennan, loves Quelf! We also enjoy Scriblish, Oodles of Doodles, Catch Phrase, Cities and Knights (Settler’s on steroids), Balderdash, Funglish and even an occassional game of Clue. And when we play Clue it is done in character kind of like a murder dinner theatre.
When we play games with friends, especially the Vogt family, I laugh so hard that I cry and I become loud and somewhat foolish. It’s wonderful.
Thanks for the post, Beth. And all I really have to say is……
GAME NIGHT!!!
Shark bait, indeed!
Nothing like a game night with the Martys to get the endorphins (and the laughter and the tears-caused-by-laughter) flowing.
GAME NIGHT!
