  1. I can only give a brand-new used-to-be for this one.

Since my health made travel home for the holidays utterly impossible in recent years, we had a long phone call with Barb’s family (two brothers’ families and parents) as they spent Christmas Eve evening at Barb’s parents’ house.

The living room back home would be awash with presents, and the sound of love and laughter would come across the phone to lift our hearts and spirits, and even get the dogs barking.

And now, with the death of Barbara’s Mom in October, that crystal heirloom is broken, forever, for she was truly the heart and soul of the event. Yes, it should have been Jesus, or family, or the weight of tradition. But sometimes life just doesn’t work that way.

Life will go on. The drifting sand that the years bring will fill the empty foundation of the house that used to stand there, warm and alive, on our Christmas Eves.

I can only hope that God preserves everything that’s good and loved, and that one day in forever we’ll pick up a cell phone with an eternally perfect signal, and hear, once again, the sound of the days loved and lost.

    God, PLEASE!
