“Happiness often sneaks in through a door you didn’t know you left open.” ~ John Barrymore, American actor
It’s delightful when happiness tiptoes up behind you, taps you on the shoulder, and then — when you turn around — yells “Surprise!”
Yesterday that happened when …
- my daughter’s laughter mingled with her boyfriend’s
- my 10-year-old crawled into bed wearing the silly Cookie Monster hat I bought her (to replace the one she’d lost)
- the first snowflakes fell from the sky (Ah! The weatherman was right!)
All little things … tiny moments when happiness snuck up on me. Reasons to be thankful in the midst of the “everything” going on right now.
In Your Words: Has happiness popped through an unexpected door for you? I’d love to hear about it!

I received a “free morning” on Tuesday courtesy of my MOPS group. I take advantage of any morning when my son and I can practice separation. (He cries now every time I try to leave him … church nursery, etc.) When I stopped in to pick him up, he was happily playing with a truck.
I love cookie monster.
Hmm. You might call my young DD’s behavior at the OB/GYN appt. yesterday surprising. Or the fact that I had two home sick and they both had to go (yes, that is one surprise I can do without in the future). 😀

I don’t really care for those “home sick” surprises either, Wendy. Hope the appointment went okay. 🙂
Wow, so many little things open the doors of happiness for me. When my kiddos are helpful without being asked, when they throw an impulsive hug around my waist. Seeing autumn colors moves my heart toward worship and joy. Spending time with friends and family push that door wide open. Glad you’re finding happiness in this season.
I love when God gives us those little moments of joy to keep us going. Great post, Beth!
Me too, Sarah, me too.
And lately, I’ve needed those little moments.
The day you were born!
Spoken like a mom.
🙂
I understand, Beth. When I looked out the door today, the beauty of the snow refreshed my soul. And a good laugh over my picture in the Daily Mail with family helped too.
Scoti … I looked at those photos and smiled … and cried.
