My youngest daughter’s club volleyball team is heading out for a weekend tournament. Three days of nonstop competition. Three days to see teamwork in action — win or lose –and oh, how we hope for wins!
But I’ve learned watching CJ’s team that a day is successful if the team plays well no matter what the score is at the end of the match. Playing well = communicating + being resilient + encouraging one another on and off the court + never giving up.
Her team has come together. They’re sticking together. And they are working together — doing what it takes to be successful. Showing up for practices and staying in the game at tournaments, whether it’s a day-long one or a weekend-long one.
Because that’s what a team does.
In Your Words: Henry Ford broke teamwork down into “coming together” and “keeping together” and “working together.” What would you add to the definition of teamwork?

I tend to see teamwork through a different lens; it tends to make me rather a misfit in the life I now occupy.
“Everyone who goes out, comes home…or no one does.”
Few civilians can understand what that really means, and fewer still comprehend that Valhalla is, in the words of Al Sever, the true heaven, while Hell is reserved for those who don’t fall in combat.

Andrew: I like the lens you view teamwork through. It is the ultimate sense of loyalty and I am not surprised you live your life that way.
Another thought –
Individual effort is thesis; teamwork is synthesis.
or…
Teamwork lets us build a human pyramid, that we may give the giant of fear a punch in the nose.
and maybe…
For the good of the team, we lose ourselves to a corporate identity that exists only for the good of its individual members.

May I quote you, my friend? All three times? 🙂
I’d be honoured, Beth. You just made my day!
I’ve always heard there is no “I” in team. All must work together with no one more important than another.

Agree, Gail. The best teams allow no prima donnas. I saw this played out on my son’s high school wrestling team. No one was cut — you tried out,you made the team. Obviously there were wrestlers who were better than others, but the better wrestlers helped the less experienced ones improve. Everyone was welcome — everyone was a valued part of the team.
There are no stars in teamwork–everyone works to make the other person look good.
