In Others’ Words: Looking in the Mirror

looking in the mirror 2014

Have you looked in the mirror today?

Who — or what — was staring back at you?

Stop. Don’t just rush past that last question. It’s the entire point of today’s post. Close your eyes for a minute and think: Who — or what — are you using as a mirror?

Mirrors. They’re all about approval.

  • Does my hair look good?
  • Does my makeup look nice?
  • Did I get a close enough shave?
  • Do I have any food stuck between my teeth?
  • How’s my outfit look?

We’re always looking for a “thumbs up.” A “you’re good to go.” Maybe even a “never seen you look better.”

But look past the mirror. Whose voice are you hearing? Whose holding the mirror? How did you decide what warranted enough approval that you could walk away from the mirror without looking back?

In Your Words: It’s the question of the day, friends. Who — or what — are you using as a mirror?

  1. Wow, I never thought about it quite like this, Beth. Great post. I’ve used many mirrors in my life. Many of them have given me a distorted reflection of me. I’m getting better at using God’s word as my mirror. It says He delights in me, loves me with an everlasting love, that I’m His girl (my paraphrase 🙂 ).

This quote came from Andy Stanley’s series The Comparison Trap, which I’m listening to via podcast. It’s profound, dare I say life changing? Yes, I dare.

  2. Thought provoking questions, indeed… As I head off to lead worship this morning, I pray for a willingness to put that mirror firmly in Jesus’ hands. And though I may not see it, I pray that others will be touched by His life in me more than by any outward adornment, skill… or lack thereof. (wink) And, yes, I want eyes to see myself this way too. Beautiful and accepted, because I am His.

  3. A friend of mine is going through aggressive chemo, and last week he said he barely recognizes himself when he looks in the mirror. Physically, the chemo is taking a toll. But I still see the same sweet man I’ve always seen. He enters the room with a smile on his face and a kind word for everybody.

    Thanks for sharing today.
