It’s National Author’s Day! Have to celebrate It’s National Author’s Day! Have to celebrate this one, yes? I had no idea it was started back in 1928 by Nellie Verne Burt McPherson — what a fantastic name! —who, at that time was president of the Bement, Illinois Women’s Club. She also was a teacher and loved reading. National Author’s Day became a nationally recognized holiday in 1949. Let’s celebrate! Whenever you see a writer celebrate writing “The End” of a story it’s about more than being finished with their word count. When I think of Christopher Reeve, who spoke the w When I think of Christopher Reeve, who spoke the words of hope in todays quote, I remember two things about him: how he played the title character in the Superman film series and he was paralyzed from the neck down after being thrown from a horse during an equestrian competition. If anyone needed hope, Christopher Reeves did when he was faced with life in a wheelchair and using a ventilator for the rest of his life. I’ve read about Reeve’s close friendship with actor/comedian Robin Williams. The story goes how Williams showed up at the hospital and made Reeve’s laugh — his first time since his horrible accident. Perhaps that was the first glimmer of hope for Christopher Reeve. As a writer, sometimes I can be all about crossing As a writer, sometimes I can be all about crossing my t’s and dotting my i’s. I focus on finding just the right word and ponder an em dash over an ellipses. But these choices don’t create the moments I treasure most as a writer — the occasions of accidental brilliance where the words fall into unplanned moments of beauty. The editor in me will always value spelling and punctuation and yes, grammar. But even more than the mechanics, writing is a true act of faith.
