In Others’ Words: Start

Monday is a great day for beginning, isn’t it?

Sure, I may drag some things to do over from last week — but I play a little mental mind game with myself as I look at a brand new To Do list. I’m not confronting last week’s leftovers. Nope. I’m taking on a brand new list.

But if I’m honest with myself — and with all of you — there are items on my list that have been there for weeks. From Monday to Friday (and repeat, repeat, repeat), I’m determined to get whatever it is done.

And then I don’t.

Does that undone thing disappear? Does someone come along and do it for me? Hardly. And here’s the hard truth: The longer I put it off, the less likely it is that I’m ever going to do it.

It’s Monday. And today, I’m going to tackle one “never started” task. Just one. I’ll even tell you what it is: I am going to take on one of my “hotspots” — one of the places where the papers pile up to a teeter-tottering mass of what’s-in-there-anyway? (I have several to choose from.)

In Your Words: Happy Monday — a day of beginnings! What never-started-longest-to-finish task will you conquer today?

I’m visiting over at K. Dawn Byrd’s blog today, talking about the beginnings of Wish You Were Here and what’s next — Catch a Falling Star, which releases next spring.

  1. My desk has hot spots, too. You’ve encouraged me to tackle one, not stare at all. Having just been in Hawaii for the first time, I learned that hot spots are where the newest land is being formed, something like 500 acres in recent years–so let’s believe for new land formed and gained. Thanks, Beth. Have a great day.

  2. You know what’s cool? This morning the very first thought in my head–totally not making this up–was “It’s a new day, a new beginning.” Which is so much better than my usual, “Whhhhy is it 5 a.m. already?!?!” So it was fun to read this post, which really reflected my start to the day. 🙂

Last week at work I had these great intentions of tackling several grants and never got to them. So that’s what I’m going to take on this morning.

  3. Great post, Beth. I’m very slowly working at purging my home of things we don’t use or don’t need. Simplifying is so difficult. I’m going to make it my goal to spend some time on a hotspot and on purging.

  4. Nice Monday food for thought, Beth! Slowly but surely, I’m cleaning out all of the closets in my house. I seem to have Christmas decorations in EVERY SINGLE ONE. Wow…

  5. I tacked one of my hot spots yesterday and cleaned out my desk drawer. Today, I’m really going to go to Chick Fil A and get our flyer approved. I keep putting that off and it has to be done.

I should tackle my closet. It’s going to stay a disaster a little longer.

  6. Beth,

Great thought for today but I’m coming at it from a different angle. I’m chomping at the bit to start working on my next WIP but home school is top priority today and I’ve been putting it off because I WANT to do my own thing.

But the sooner we get math and science and history attacked and checked off the list, the sooner I can get to my MS – so what am I waiting for????

    Thanks for the challenge,
    Becky

  7. Happy Monday – I still have a full 8 hours of work a head of me this afternoon and evening at my job. Lots to conquer there.

  8. Oh, dear. I have so many things on my desk…and in the shop…and on the living room floor…

Today I’m going to try to figure out the geometry of the doubler plate for the rudder control horn for a Fokker D.VI. I’ve been putting it off because I could do it easy, but it’s a pain to do it right.

    Already got some skinned knuckles…

  9. Organizing paperwork seems to own a constant space on my to-do list. I have great intentions, but not always enough time. Sigh. I need to set my timer for 15 minutes and tackle as much as I can in that timeframe. Little by little, I’ll get it done.

  10. I have hotspots all over the house… The problem is that kids are so messy, I never seem to made a dent in the disaster. Cleaning is the constant bane of my to do list!
