I used to avoid messy moments.
Hide my messy moments.
Now I write about messy moments. And some of the messy moments in my novels aren’t imaginary — they’re just fictionalized.
I understand that life is messy. I accept that life — my life — is messy. Acceptance doesn’t mean I always like life’s rough edges and unsettled seasons. And yes, I can still be surprised by them.
But messy moments? That’s life.
And for me, those are the moments God redeems. He’s not surprised by mistakes and missteps and fractured relationships and our own brokenness. No, he’s all about stepping into our messiness and healing it.
And yes, I like writing about that, too.

I don’t have messy moments. I am steel, tempered by pain and burnished by grace.

Andrew: I would dare say some of your messy moments have done the tempering — and that God’s grace was found there.
Good point! 🙂
Yeah, I’ve had a messy moment or two . . . or a thousand in my life. When I was younger I tried to hide them. Now, I realize these are the moments that God can work through me to encourage others. We all have messy moments. The question is, will we let God work in and through them? That’s my desire.

So true, Jeanne. God works through the messy moments and makes them — and us — beautiful.
Oh every day I think there is one messy moment or another.. I am learning much about Grace and patience and my loving Abba God. So glad he loves a mess like me..

Amen, Mary. It’s in the messy moments … our messy moments, that God reveals who He is. And how much He loves us.
