In Others’ Words: Messy Moments

Beth Vogtbrokenness, In Others' Words, Quotes 7 Comments

I used to avoid messy moments.

Hide my messy moments.

Now I write about messy moments. And some of the messy moments in my novels aren’t imaginary — they’re just fictionalized.

I understand that life is messy. I accept that life — my life — is messy. Acceptance doesn’t mean I always like life’s rough edges and unsettled seasons. And yes, I can still be surprised by them.

But messy moments? That’s life.

And for me, those are the moments God redeems. He’s not surprised by mistakes and missteps and fractured relationships and our own brokenness. No, he’s all about stepping into our messiness and healing it.

And yes, I like writing about that, too.

  1. Yeah, I’ve had a messy moment or two . . . or a thousand in my life. When I was younger I tried to hide them. Now, I realize these are the moments that God can work through me to encourage others. We all have messy moments. The question is, will we let God work in and through them? That’s my desire.
