In Others’ Words: The Best Season

Beth VogtIn Others' Words, Quotes, summer 6 Comments

Summer vacation is over for some families.

Others of us are counting down the few remaining days before kids head back to school.

The joy of “It’s summertime!” is fading into school days and the realization that the next season is just around the calendar corner.

Summer is a grand time isn’t it? Vacations, family visits, the 4th of July, cookouts, campouts, going to the pool, going to the beach, staying up late, and sleeping in even later …

Harper Lee’s words evoke memories of summers gone by … and yes, this summer, too. Everything good to eat? That’s summertime, too, with fresh fruit and s’mores and homemade ice cream. My family has indulged in all of those during the weeks of summer!

In Your Words: What’s been the best thing about this summer for you?

  1. This summer…a season of fell days and metastatic mileposts, of bones suddenly fragile and breaking, and fatigue forcing sour, sleepless rest.

Pancreatic cancer is grinning like a jack-o-lantern, savouring each and every small and large thing it takes from me, this summer.

But its pleasure will not last, for I am merely down, and not out.

I’m coming off the mat with a right hook that could flatten Cleveland.

And Mr. Pancreatic Cancer, while he may yet win, will forever cry like a little girl at the mere mention of my name.

    This is my Churchill Summer.

    Never give up.
    Never, never give up.
    Never, never, never give up.

      Andrew:
You remind me, remind us, that life goes on during the summer months, too. And that sometimes life is hard, hard, hard.
And I know with every breath you take, you say, “never give up. Never, never give up.”
      Praying for you, my friend.

  2. My best thing this summer has been some within U.S. trips, especially one to D.C. and area, that ended up being more important and memorable than I expected to the point that I’ll be going back. And then there were several great days earlier in summer when I was able to see one of my dearest friends & family from Colorado 🙂 Today I go w/ 5 other friends up to Ontario Canada for 3-4 days. I’ve also got my son and 2 youngest home from a great if exhausting trip to W. Coast. My grandson manages to put more love into the name “Grandma” when he first sees me than I imagined possible–still absorbing. This summer rocks!
