In Others’ Words: Time Requirement

Each of us is striving toward a different goal, but whatever we want to accomplish requires the same thing: skill, and effort, and time.

Sometimes, more than anything else, the time required to reach our goals trips us up.

We feel good about ourselves when we’re learning a skill.

We feel good about effort of any kind. Pursuing a writing dream? Effort looks like attending a writing conference where you network, attend workshops, pitch your work-in-progress (WIP), maybe win an award.

But time? The how long it takes for things to happen? The waiting?

We struggle with the timing of it all.

Sometimes things happen fast — and that’s it’s own kind of challenge. But believe me, there was waiting involved in the “overnight success” stories, too.

And for those who wait?  Well, waiting can seem like a waste of time. But time is made up of both doing — learning the skills and making the effort — and waiting. And then repeating that cycle.

All great achievements — the great achievement you are pursuing — takes time. Don’t fight it. Use it to your advantage.

In Your Words: How can you use time — the upcoming hours, days, weeks — to help yourself pursue your dream?

      1. Well-said, Beth.

Today I am finding time kind of porous; the dreams are slipping through the gaps made by pain, to be replaced by a kind of severe contentment.

Every moment seems to stretch into an infinity of agony; the fixed linearity of time between two ticks of the clock is replaced by a multidimensional path with the same endpoints.

But along that road I am vouchsafed secrets, not for the telling, but for the strengthening, and I would not have missed this for the world.

  1. Loved this, Beth. Sometimes, time is a precious commodity, as it is for me with two teen sons home for the summer. I’m working to carve out time in the days to pursue my dream, because making those minutes and hours available and using them for my story is the only way to move forward in my dream.

  2. Time is an amazing quantity. On this trip I’ve meaningfully connected with one person I had not seen in 46 years and the other I perhaps saw when she was age 4, or had never seen, and yet we are instantly joined and know each other quite thoroughly. Sometimes time kaleidoscopes and other times it seems endless. Both are just right, yet unforgettable. I’m trying to wrap my head around it.

Love this line:”Sometimes time kaleidoscopes and other times it seems endless.”
So much truth in this … and yes, trying to wrap my head around it, too.

  3. Good words for me today! The waiting…oh the waiting…for my platform to grow to a respectable enough size to be worthy of consideration. The constant effort to improve it and to create value there can be draining and–let’s be honest–discouraging! But considering the only other alternative would be to give up, I’ll take the waiting! Praying for patience (but I wish God would hurry LOL).
